5/23/02: Bobby Santiago (6-2, 175) from Hallows High School in the Bronx,
NY, and Hendrik Feist (6-4, 190) from Achem, Germany, have signed National
Letters of Intent to play for the Seawolves for the 2002-03 season.
5/7/02: Sophomore guard D.J. Munir was named the team's Most Valuable
Player, and teammate Patrick Spitler was named the team's Most Improved
Player.
4/25/02: Sophomore guard D.J. Munir was named to the National Invitation
Tournament and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Division I Third
Team. Last year, Stony Brook's Leon Brisport was named to the Second Team.
3/2/02: The Seawolves lost to Vermont in the America East Conference
Tournament Quarterfinals, by a score of 74-59, to finish their season at 6-22.
3/2/02: Seawolves Sophomore D.J. Munir was named to the 2nd team America
East All Conference team. The America East 1st Conference team consisted of
T.J. Sorentine (Vermont - also named America East Player of the Year),
Chris Brown (New Hampshire), Billy Collins (Boston University), Trevor
Gaines (Vermont), and Justin Rowe (Maine). In addition to Munir, the 2nd
Conference team consisted of Chaz Carr (Boston University), Taylor Coppenrath
(Vermont - also named America East Rookie of the Year), Austin Ganly (New
Hampshire), and Errick Greene (Maine). The third Conference team included
Jean Bain (Northeastern), Will Brand (Albany), Pierre Johnson (Hartford),
Jeffrey St. Fort (Binghamton), and Ryan Stys (Hartford). University of
Vermont's Coach Tom Griffin was named the America East Coach of the Year.
3/2/02: The pairings are set for the America East Conference Tournament
Quarterfinal round: Stony Brook, the 8th seed, will meet first seed Vermont,
at 6 PM, on Saturday, March 2nd, in Matthews Arena, Boston MA. Catch all the
action live on WUSB-FM (90.1) radio.
2/24/02: With 0.8 seconds remaining in the game, Mike Konopka took a
pass and took an three point shot and was fouled. He canned 2 free throws
to defeat Alabny, on the road, 48-47.
2/21/02: Stony Brook led most of the way, but lost at home to
Boston U, 64-62. Mike Konopka (16 points), and D.J. Munir (15 points) led
the Seawolves attack.
2/18/02: Jon Paul Kobryn was named America East Rookie of the Week.
2/17/02: The Seawolves won at home over Northeastern, 85-70, behind 28
points from Jon Paul Kobryn and 14 assists from D.J. Munir.
2/15/02: The Seawolves lost a tough overtime game at home to Hartford,
80-73, despite an outstanding 24-point effort from Mike Konopka.
2/12/02: Larry Jennings will miss the remainder of the season, by
undergoing surgery on his ailing foot.
2/10/02: The Seawolves snapped a 5-game skid, by defeating Maine on the
road, by a score of 57-52. Stony Brook was led by Jon Paul Kobryn who
collected 18 points and 6 rebounds.
2/8/02: The Seawolves lost on the road to New Hampshire, 67-57, to fall
to 3-19 (2-9 America East) on the season.
2/2/02: The Seawolves lost at home to Albany, 65-54. D.J. Munir led
Stony Brook in the losing effort, with 28 points.
1/26/02: The Seawolves dropped to 3-17 (2-7 in the America East), with
a loss at Hartford, 76-70. D.J. Munir led the Seawolves with 21 points.
1/24/02: The Seawolves played Conference-leading Vermont tough to the
finish, but came up short, at home, 72-67. D.J. Munir led the Seawolves
with 22 points, Mike Konopka added 15, and Lee Church had his finest all-around
game of his career, finishing with 10 points.
1/18/02: The Seawolves dropped an America East Conference game to
New Hampshire, at home, by a score of 75-68. Stony Brook never led in
the game, despite a 27-point effort from D.J. Munir.
1/17/02: The Seawolves announced 3 transferees: 6-7, 230-pound Sophomore
forward Cori Spencer (Fordham), 6-3, 190-pound shooting guard John Bucaro
(Holy Cross), and 6-3, 190-pound guard Tyrone Stallings (Fordham). All 3
will be eligible to play beginning in January, 2003. According to coach
Nick Macarchuk, Spencer is an Atlantic-10/Big East caliber player, who will
provide tremendous inside presence.
1/15/02: Stony Brook won their first road game of the year by defeating
America East Conference foe Binghamton, 66-62. D.J. Munir led the Seawolves
with a superb 24 point effort, while Jon Paul Kobryn chipped in with 19 points.
1/12/02: Stony Brook lost at Boston University, 90-54, to go 2-14 (1-4),
on the season.
1/10/02: The Seawolves were defeated by Northeastern on the road, 91-65,
to move to 2-13 (1-3) on the season. Larry Jennings led Stony Brook with
14 points.
1/6/02: The Seawolves came from behind to defeat Maine at home, 68-65,
to earn their 1st America East victory ever. D.J. Munir and Mike Konopka
each scored 17 points in the victory.
1/2/02: The Seawolves were beaten by the Vermont Catamounts, in an
America East Conference game, 91-60.
12/29/01: The Seawolves lost their America East Opener to Binghamton,
at home, by a score of 60-52. The Seawolves drop to 1-11 overall.
12/28/01: Sophomore Tyrone Stallings (G, 6-3, 190) transferred from
Fordham and will be eligible to play in January, 2003.
12/22/01: Stony Brook lost to Brown on the road, 87-60, to drop to
1-10 on the season. D.J. Munir led the Seawolves with 23 points, and JonPaul
Kobryn chipped in with 16.
12/13/01: Stony Brook lost another road game to Army, 71-60. J.B.
Bennett lead the Seawolves in scoring with 18 points.
12/11/01: The Seawolves dropped a game to Villanova, on the road, by
a score of 76-54. Mike Orfini (16 points) and Mike Konopka (15 points) led
the Seawolves in scoring.
12/10/01: Mike Orfini was named Stony Brook's first America East Rookie
of the Week by averaging 13 points and 6 rebounds in 2 games last week.
12/8/01: The Seawolves were defeated by Hofstra, on the road, by a
score of 76-67. Jairus McCollum led Stony Brook with 20 points.
12/4/01: In perhaps their biggest Division 1 win in history, the
Seawolves defeated Rollie Massomino's Cleveland State Vikings, at home, by
a score of 64-56. D.J. Munir led the Seawolves with 21 points.
12/1/01: The Seawolves lost their 6th game in a row, bowing to the
Harvard Crimson, 64-59. Mike Konopka led the Seawolves with 22 points.
11/28/01: The Seawolves were blown out by Rutgers, on the road, by a
score of 76-37.
11/24/01: The Seawolves lost the consolation game of the Red Auerbach
Classic, by losing to America East rival Binghamton, 53-51.
11/23/01: The Seawolves dropped an opening round decision in the
Red Auerbach Classic, by losing to Yale, 82-62.
11/19/01: The Seawolves dropped a close game to Sacred Heart, by
squandering a late lead, and lost 76-71, despite a career high 36 points
from D.J. Munir.
11/17/01: The Seawolves dropped their season opener at St. Johns, by a
score of 72-55. D.J. Munir led the Seawolves with 15 points.
11/16/01: D.J. Munir became the first player in the program's history
to earn Division 1 pre-season All-Conference honors. The Basketball News
picked Munir Second-Team All-Conference (America East) in its pre-season
issue.
11/13/01: The Seawolves open their 2001-02 season on the road versus St.
Johns, on Saturday, 11/17. The game will be televised locally on TV 55.
11/12/01: Stony Brook was defeated at home, by the Harlem Globetrotters,
in an exhibition game, 88-64, in front of a sellout crowd. The Seawolves
trailed by only 6 points at the half (37-31), but were overmatched by the
Globetrotters in the 2nd half. Jairus McCollum led the Seawolves with 15
points and 10 rebounds, while JonPaul Kobryn added 11 points. The
Globetrotters were led by Dwayne Rogers (15 points), former NBA player Chris
Morris (12 points), and Ronald Nunnery (13 points). The Globetrotters boasted
several former NBA players including Morris, Greg "Cadillac" Anderson, Oliver
Miller, and Doug Smith.
11/8/01: The Seawolves were picked to finish 7th in the America East
Pre-season poll, as selected by America East coaches. The point tallies
for this pre-season poll were as follows (first place votes in parentheses):
10/29/01: The Stony Brook Seawolves were dealt a blow, when starting
guard Larry Jennings suffered a hairline fracture of a bone in his left
foot, during a practice. Jennings should miss about 2 months of the season,
before resuming action around the end of December.
10/16/01: The Stony Brook Seawolves will play its only 2001-02 exhibition
game against the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters on Monday, November 12th
@ 3 PM, in the Stony Brook Indoor Sports Complex. Tickets are priced at $ 10

5/10/01: Seawolves sign 2 for 2001-02 season - Stony Brook has signed
Mike Orfini (Vienna, Va/Gonzaga H.S.) nad Pieter Nieuwenhuyzen (Pittsfield,
Me/Branson H.S.) to letters of intent for the upcoming season.
4/20/01: Brisport given local honors - Leon Brisport was named to the
NIT and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association 2nd team, for the 2000-01
season.
3/14/01: Macarchuk/Brisport honored as Independents - Coach Nick
Macarchuk was named Division 1 Independent Conference Coach of the Year and
Center Leon Brisport was named to the All-Independent Conference First Team,
for the 2000-01 season.
2/2001: Seawolves are America East Bound - The Stony Brook Seawolves
have been accepted to play in the America East Conference, effective July,
2001, and hence, will be eligible for automatic NCAA births in 17 sports,
including Men's Basketball.
10/12/00: Jon Paul Kobryn commits to Stony Brook - Jon Paul Kobryn, a 6-8
high school Junior Center from St. Anthony High School, in N.J., has
committed to Stony Brook for the 2001-02 season.
7/15/00: Larry Jennings transfers to Stony Brook - Larry Jennings, a 6-2
guard, who scored more than 2,000 points in his career at St. John's Prep,
and who played at St. Joseph's (Pa.) in the Atlantic-10 the last 2 seasons,
will play for the Seawolves in the 2001-02 season.
