  • Trevor Gaines scored 27 points including the 1,000th of his career as Vermont topped Stony Brook, 91-60, in America East collegiate men's basketball on Wednesday night at the Patrick Gym.

Gaines, who was named America East Player of the Week earlier in the day, hit a pair of free throws with 3:41 remaining to become the 24th Catamount to reach the 1,000-point level. It capped off a great evening in which he hit 12-of-15 from the floor and had a game-high 10 rebounds while scoring 19 second half points.

The Catamounts broke out of the gate quickly scoring the first 16 points while out-rebounding the Seawolves, 13-0, over the opening five minutes. Better work on the boards and three baskets by Jon Paul Kobryn paced a 19-7 Stony Brook run to cut it to 28-21 with five minutes to play in the opening half. But Vermont, behind six points by Gaines, closed out the first stanza with a 13-3 run to take a 41-24 lead at the break.

The second half was all Vermont as the inside play of Gaines, Taylor Coppenrath and Grant Anderson, who combined in the game to shoot 22-for-29 from the floor, sealed the win, the Catamounts' seventh straight overall and their second in conference play. The seven-game win streak is the program's best since 1977 and the team's 9-3 start is the their best since 1993-94.

In addition to Gaines, four other Catamounts reached double-digits as Coppenrath had 18 (also eight boards and four blocked shots), Mike Goia scored 15 while T.J. Sorrentine had 14 and Grant Anderson tallied 10. Andre Anderson also added a career-high five assists. UVM shot a season-best 56% from the floor and won the battle of the boards, 38-24.

For the Seawolves, Kobryn tallied a career-best 18 (eight-for-10 FG'S) along with seven rebounds while Mike Orfini added nine points as Stony Brook fell for the seventh straight time and to 0-2 in their inaugural season in the America East.

Vermont, now 9-3 overall, heads to Boston to take on Boston University on Saturday at 1 pm and Northeastern on Monday at 7 pm. The Seawolves (1-12), who have played 11 of their first 13 games away from home, return to Long Island to host Maine on Sunday at 4 pm.

  • Binghamton used a 29-10 edge in free throw attempts to lead to a 60-52 victory over Stony Brook at the SBU Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. The game was the America East Conference opener for both teams.

The Bearcats (4-6, 1-0 America East) went to the line 17 times in just the first half alone, connecting on 11 en route to a 30-27 edge at halftime. Meanwhile, the Seawolves (1-11, 0-1 America East) struggled from the field early on, scoring just nine points in the first 10 minutes of the game. However, Stony Brook managed to take the lead for the first time when Mike Orfini hit four straight free throws for a 13-11 advantage. A Lamar Johnson three-pointer made it 27-23 Stony Brook, but BU's Jeffrey St. Fort nailed a trey of his own to bring the Bearcats within one. Binghamton took the lead for good with a St. Fort free throw at the 1:38 mark and closed the half with a fast break lay-up for the 30-27 halftime lead.

The Seawolves tied the game for the sixth time of the afternoon when D.J. Munir's jumper evened the score at 38-38 with 13:44 remaining. But that would be as close as Stony Brook would get, as the Bearcats built the lead to as many as 12. Anthony Green's lay-up stretched the Binghamton lead to 58-46 with just under five minutes left, and the Seawolves got no closer than the final margin of eight, 60-52.

Both teams struggled offensively, with the Bearcats hitting just 20-of-57 shots (35 percent) and Stony Brook connecting on 21-of-52 field goals (40 percent).

Munir led Stony Brook with 16 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Mike Orfini had 15 points, and Larry Jennings chipped in with 7 points in his first game this season after recuperating from a broken left foot.

For the Bearcats, it was St. Fort leading the way with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Andrew Hannan and Stanley Ocitti contributed 10 points apiece.

The loss snaps Stony Brook's 13-game winning streak at the Sports Complex.

  • After trailing by as many as 10 points in the first half, the Stony Brook men's basketball team roared back to defeat Cleveland State, 64-56, for its first win of the season at the SBU Sports Complex Tuesday night. The win, was perhaps the Seawolves biggest win in Division 1 history.

The Seawolves (1-6) led for the first time all night right before the first half ended, but an 8-2 Vikings run to open the second stanza put Cleveland State (2-3) back in control. The lead see-sawed until two D.J. Munir free throws tied the game for the fourth time at 54-54 with just over four minutes remaining in the game. Jairus McCollum's jumper with less than two minutes to go gave the Seawolves the lead for good, as Stony Brook scored 12 of the final 14 points of the game. Stony Brook earned its largest lead of the night at 64-54.

Stony Brook was hindered by poor shooting at the beginning of the game, as the Vikings raced to a 14-4 lead in the first five minutes. But the Seawolves steadily cut into the lead, and went ahead for the first time on Munir's three-pointer with 3:18 to go before the break.

Munir's 21 points led all scorers, and the sophomore added five rebounds and five assists. Freshman Mike Orfini added 12 points and seven boards, while McCollum chipped in with 11 points.

Jermaine Robinson led Cleveland State with 17 points, and Theo Dixon added 14.

With the win, the Seawolves extended their homecourt winning streak to 13 games.

  • D.J. Munir's 22 points were not enough as Binghamton's Stanley Ocitti scored 12 second-half points to help the Bearcats rally from a 27-21 halftime deficit to defeat Stony Brook, 53-51, in the consolation round of the Red Auerbach Colonial Classic Saturday night.

The Seawolves trailed 12-11 midway through the first half before going on a 16-4 run to take a 27-16 lead on D.J. Munir's three with 2:36 remaining before the break. However, the Bearcats closed the half with a 5-0 spurt and began the second half with an 11-4 run to take a 32-31 advantage. A pair of Munir free throws with 15:06 left put SB back ahead 33-32, but it would be the last lead that Stony Brook would have on the night.

Ocitti then scored nine of Binghamton's next 12 points as the Bearcats pulled ahead 44-39. Stony Brook hung around and closed the gap to within one point on two occasions at 48-47 and 50-49 before Jeffrey Daws hit a clutch three-pointer to give BU a 53-49 advantage with 52 ticks left on the clock.

Stony Brook had one last chance to win the game. A pair of Munir free throws drew SB within 53-51 and after a Bearcat miss in the final seconds, Munir pushed the ball upcourt and found an open Lamar Johnson, whose three-point attempt glanced off the rim as time ran out.

Munir finished with a game-high 22 points while Jairus McCollum came off the bench to collect five points and seven rebounds. Stony Brook was again hindered by poor shooting all night long, hitting 34 percent (16-27) for the game and a frosty 29 percent (7-24) in the second half.

The loss drops SB's record to 0-4 while Binghamton improved to 1-2. Stony Brook will next be in action when they hit the road to face Rutgers on November 28. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.

Following a D.J. Munir basket to give Stony Brook a 2-0 lead less than a minute into the game, Yale went on a 13-0 run to take control and never trailed from that point on.
