After falling behind 5-2 early, Stony Brook scored four straight to pull ahead 6-5. Kenny Doleac's lay-up gave Army a 9-8 advantage at the 13:20 mark, the last time the Seawolves would trail. After Jonte Harrell's jumper tied the score at 15-15, the Seawolves responded with a 7-0 run to take control. D.J. Munir and Jairus McCollum each notched two free throws and Balliro connected from three-point range to give Stony Brook the 22-15 edge. Balliro had 10 first-half points to lead the Seawolves, while Leon Brisport chipped in with seven, despite playing only eight minutes due to foul trouble.

Army pulled within seven on Charles Woodruff's jumper, closing the gap to 40-33 six minutes into the second half. Game # 6: (12/06/2000)

     Highlights of the game:

  • Maryland Terrapins - 107; Stony Brook - 59
  • Halftime Score: Maryland Terrapins - 53; Stony Brook - 20
  • Game played at Maryland
  • This was a non-Conference Game
  • Stony Brook's Overall Record is: 3-3
  • Stony Brook's Conference Record is: 0-0
  • Lonny Baxter scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half as No. 19 Maryland built a 33-point lead and coasted to its 72nd straight nonconference home win, 107-59 over Stony Brook on Wednesday night.

Byron Mouton and Juan Dixon also scored 19 for the Terrapins (4-3), who have won three straight. Maryland's nonconference home winning streak, which began in 1989, is the longest in the nation. The crowd of 13,206 was the largest that a Stony Brook team has ever played in front of, eclipsing the crowd of 12,059 at the University of Utah on November 29, 1999.

Playing at Cole Field House for the first time after a six-game run through Hawaii, Wisconsin and Washington, the Terrapins made themselves right at home against the Seawolves (3-3).

Baxter scored off the opening tip and went 6-for-7 from the field to help Maryland take a 53-20 halftime lead. The Seawolves, who start three freshmen, went the final 10:52 of the half without a basket while being outscored 25-2.

The second half was noteworthy only in that Maryland coach Gary Williams received a technical foul with 15:06 left and the Terrapins leading 70-26.

Leon Brisport led the Seawolves with 18 points. It was the third-worst defeat in the history of the program, which moved up to the Division I level last year.

Baxter made his first four shots from the field and Dixon hit successive 3-pointers to cap a 8-0 spurt that 1put the Terrapins up 19-9.

It was 24-16 before Baxter and Mouton both scored six points and Danny Miller connected from beyond the arc during a 16-2 run that provided Maryland with a 22-point cushion.

With three minutes left in the half, Baxter had six field goals and five free throw attempts compared to seven baskets and four foul shots for the Seawolves.

Maryland's Steve Blake added to the Seawolves' misery by sinking a desperation heave from just inside the midcourt line as the first half ended.

    Blake finished with a career-high 13 assists.

  • It was showtime in upper Manhattan on Saturday night, but it wasn't at the Apollo Theatre. Instead, it was the Leon Brisport show held at Levien Gymnasium on the campus of Columbia University. The senior center registered a career-high 35 points and 13 rebounds to lead Stony Brook to a 67-63 overtime win over \ Columbia. He did so on 7-10 shooting and connecting on an incredible 21-of-25 free throw attempts. His performance set a new standard as it was the most points ever scored and the most free throws ever attempted by a visiting player in Levien Gymnasium.

The game started out slow for Stony Brook as the Seawolves shot only 27 percent from the field in the first half, knocking down only six baskets in the first 20 minutes. But it was Brisport who kept the Seawolves in it. Down 15-11, he scored five straight points to give the Seawolves the lead with 7:54 remaining in the first half. Later, he connected on two free throws to push Stony Brook's lead to 25-19 with over two minutes remaining. Columbia answered right back with two baskets by Chris Wiedemann to pull the Lions to within 25-23 at the break. Brisport finished the half with 13 points, including 7-7 from the free throw line.

The second half continued to be a see-saw battle that saw the game tied on seven occasions and the lead change hands four times. Stony Brook twice held a five-point lead, the latest coming with 6:00 remaining when D.J. Munir nailed a three-pointer to put SB ahead 47-42. Craig Austin answered right back with a three of his own to ignite a 5-0 Lions run that knotted the score at 47.

With less than three minutes to go and Stony Brook clinging to a 51-50 lead, Columbia got a pair of free throws from Maurice Murphy and added another from Austin to surge ahead 53-51 with a minute remaining.

On the next possession for Stony Brook, Munir drove the lane and was fouled. He calmly hit two free throws with 37 seconds left and the game was tied at 53. Columbia missed on the ensuing possession and Brisport pulled down the rebound, was fouled and went to the free throw line. He hit both attempts to give SB the lead 55-53 with 22 ticks on the clock.

Columbia would not go away, however, and it was the Lions' Austin that continued to haunt the Seawolves. As the clock dwindled under 10 seconds, he drove the lane and hit a running layup with four seconds left that sent the game to overtime.

In the overtime, Brisport took over. He scored Stony Brook's first eight points as the Seawolves took control in the extra session jumping out to a 63-58 advantage. A three-pointer by Murphy got the Lions to within 63-61, but Chris Balliro's lay up with 28 seconds to go and a pair of free throws by Munir sealed Stony Brook's fourth win of the year.

Brisport's 25 free throw attempts equalled the Stony Brook single-game record held by Emeka Smith. Smith hit 23-of-25 free throws against Lehman on December 7, 1991.

With the victory, the Seawolves improve to 4-3 on the year. Last season, the Seawolves did not register their fourth victory until January 15.

  • Chris Balliro's heroics in regulation went for naught as Stony Brook fell to Maryland-Eastern Shore in men's basketball last night, 85-79, in overtime.

Balliro hit a desperation three-pointer from the right wing with 0.5 seconds on the clock to tie the score at 74 and send the game into overtime, but after taking a short-lived lead, Stony Brook couldn't find any offense.

Trailing 67-60 with 1:30 remaining in regulation, the Seawolves began to chip away. Josh Little hit a three to pull Stony Brook to 73-71 with seven seconds left, and Thomas Trotter was immediately fouled. Trotter hit 1 of 2 free throws to set up Balliro's shot.

Trotter opened the overtime session with a three-pointer, but Little answered with a three of his own to knot the score at 77 for Stony Brook. Leon Brisport gave Stony Brook its first lead since the first half on two free throws for a 79-77 lead with 3:01 remaining, but Stony Brook went cold from that point and failed to score another point. Maryland closed the game on an 8-0 run.

Brisport led the Seawolves (4-4) in scoring again, with 20 points and eight rebounds and Balliro finished with 17 points. The Seawolves' Achilles' heel was its free-throw shooting, hitting only 14-for-23 from the line. Trotter led Eastern Shore (1-4) with 25 points and Sanyika Street had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

  • Four Seawolves scored in double figures led by D.J. Munir's career-high 19 points as Stony Brook defeated Texas-Arlington, 75-72, at the Indoor Sports Complex Saturday afternoon. The win upped Stony Brook's record to 5-5 on the year while Texas-Arlington falls to 2-7.

With the Seawolves leading 67-63 with 45 second remaining, Jabari Johnson was whistled for a traveling call which gave the ball back to the Seawolves. UTA head coach Eddie McCarter protested the call and was hit with two techinical fouls and ejected from the game. Munir went 3-of-4 from the free throw line and the Seawolves held a 70-63 lead.

UTA didn't go away though and trailing 73-65, the Mavericks got a three-pointer from Steve Barber and then forced a turnover which resulted in a quick layup from Donnie Beacham and the lead was now 73-70. Stony Brook turned it over again with 13 seconds to go and the Mavericks had a chance to tie but Johnson's three-pointer was off the mark and SB's Leon Brisport hauled down the rebound. He was fouled and hit two free throws to seal the win.

The game was really a tale of two halves as Stony Brook came out and blitzed the Mavericks with a 29-9 run to start the game. Jairus McCollum was a force in the first half for the Seawolves, scoring a team-high nine points over the first 20 minutes. UTA fought back and Jason Arbuckle scored four points in the final five seconds of the first half to bring UTA within 42-29 at the break.

Texas-Arlington came out of the locker room and used to 21-9 run to close the gap to 51-50 on Johnson's three-pointer at the 9:46 mark. The Mavericks would never get closer the rest of the way.

Brisport turned in another outstanding effort as he recorded his fifth double-double of the year with 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Freshman Mike Konopka continued his fine play, netting 10 points and hauling down a career-high eight rebounds. Josh Little chipped in with 11 points.

Steven Barber and Jabari Johnson each finished with 18 points for Texas-Arlington which lost its seventh straight game since beginning the year 2-0. Mack Callier recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 boards.

  • The ball just didn't fall for No. 10 Connecticut, but the Huskies' defense was there when it mattered most.

The Huskies got 14 points from Tony Robertson and had 13 steals to hold off hot-shooting Stony Brook for a 67-58 victory Thursday night.

UConn (11-1) struggled from the perimeter - 3-of-10 from 3-point range - and wasn't much better inside, either, as layups and tap-ins rolled off the rim.

"It looked like there was a piece of plastic up there and how we responded wasn't how I'd like us to, but we got our 11th win," UConn coach Jim Calhoun said.

UConn converted three straight Stony Brook turnovers into points during a 12-0 run late in the game to pull away.

"They weren't terribly excited about playing against Stony Brook and that happens a lot" Seawolves coach Nick Macarchuk said. "We took advantage of the situation and our guys hung in there the whole game."

The Seawolves (5-6) shot 75 percent in the second half and were paced by Josh Little, who was 6-of-7 from 3-point range and had a game-high 22 points. With his performance, Little became the school's 3-point career leader with 170.

Little, a senior from nearby Rocky Hill, said he's thought about this game since the summer.

"Every day I go to the gym and I shoot late at night. This has been the game on my mind," said Little, who played despite bone chips in his left foot.

Stony Brook took a 6-0 lead, while the Huskies missed seven straight shots to open the game. Robertson's 3-pointer with four minutes gone was UConn's first field goal.

"We weren't prepared necessarily to have things go wrong for us, and when they went wrong, we didn't act right," Calhoun said.

The lead changed nine times in the first half. Caron Butler's jumper off an inside-out feed from Robertson put UConn up 25-24 with 6:34 remaining and gave the Huskies the lead for good. Stony Brook was 4-of-6 on 3-pointers in the half, including three by Little, and trailed 34-28 at halftime.

"As soon as we got our lead, they started coming right back and made it tough for us," Robertson said.

The Seawolves, playing their second year in Division I, battled within 56-53 with less than five minutes left on Leon Brisport's three-point play.

The Huskies countered with their 12-0 run, fueled by four points from Taliek Brown.

Albert Mouring, who had three of UConn's 13 steals, finished with 12 points for UConn, as the Huskies 30 points off 24 Stony Brook turnovers.

"The only way to overcome (good shooting) is to play good defense and that's what we did in the last two minutes and got the victory," Mouring said.

Brisport had 13 points and nine rebounds.

  • The Stony Brook men's basketball team handed Elon College its sixth straight road loss, 74-62, on Saturday afternoon at the USB Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (6-6) wasted no time taking control, scoring the game's first 10 points. Jairus McCollum scored two baskets and Mike Konopka and Josh Little, who had 11 first-half points, each nailed a three-pointer for the 10-0 advantage. The Phoenix's Ross Sims finally got Elon on the board with a jumper at the 16:19 mark. McCollum's free throw with two minutes remaining gave the Seawolves their largest lead of the half at 37-23, and USB took a 37-25 halftime advantage.

Stony Brook's Leon Brisport took over in the second half, scoring nine points and pulling down five rebounds. The Seawolves' largest lead came with 12:59 remaining, as Joakim Eriksson's layup gave USB a 54-33 advantage. But some late three-pointers made the final five minutes interesting. Drew Kusterman connected twice from outside and David Hall's three drew Elon to within 13 with under a minute left. Kusterman nailed another trifecta, but it was too little, too late, as clutch free throw shooting by Brisport and D.J. Munir, who each went 4-for-4 in the final 1:16, helped lead Stony Brook to the 74-62 victory.

Brisport registered his sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Konopka and Little each contributed 11, while McCollum chipped in with 10.

Dennis Gaskins led Elon with 14 points, while Larry McSwain had 12.

With the win, the Seawolves equal their win total of six from last eason. Elon College falls to 4-9.

Joe Vukovic's lay-up with 4:55 to go gave the Danes a 52-46 advantage. The Pack kept the Danes off the scoreboard over the next 2:39 and scored nine points of its own. One of three second half three-pointers by Chris Balliro keyed the run and tied the score at 52-52. Lee Church's three-point play with 2:29 left gave the Seawolves their first lead since the 16:35 mark of the second half at 55-52.

Albany's Sam Hopes' two free throws and steal led to four straight points and gave the Danes their last lead of the night at 56-55 with 1:24 left.

Church found a cutting Jairus McCollum in the lane on the Stony Brook's next possession. McCollum's shot went in and he was fouled on the play. His free throw gave Stony Brook a 58-56 lead with under a minute to play.

Balliro was fouled and hit one of two free throws after an EJ Gallup missed jumper on Albany's end. Leon Brisport nailed both of his free throws after Hopes' jumper was short, giving the Seawolves a 61-56 lead with eight seconds left.

Antione Johnson hit a long-range three-pointer with under two seconds to play that cut the deficit to 62-59, but McCollum was fouled on Stony Brook's next possession and hit both free throws to make the score 63-59.

Johnson - who scored 22 points to pace Albany - torched the nets for 16 points in the second half. His 40-foot shot as time expired counted and made the score, 63-62.

Stony Brook got out of the gates quickly, taking a 23-12 lead with 5:39 to go in the first half on Leon Brisport's nine points. Brisport ended with 18 points and eight rebounds - marking the 19th straight time he has scored in double figures.

Stony Brook stalled offensively and Albany hit its stride. The Great Danes outscored the Seawolves 29-8 over the next 13:14 bridging the first and second halves to take its largest lead of the night at 41-31 with 12:25 to play.

Brisport led four players in double figures. McCollum scored 12 points, Rob Hartman added 10 and Chris Balliro came off the bench to score 10.

Alex Barnhill registered a game-high 10 rebounds for Albany and also had 16 points and Hopes added 10 points. ATT - 1,876.
