Game # 17: (01/02/2000)

     Highlights of the game:

  • Auburn Tigers - 100; Stony Brook - 45
  • Halftime Score: Auburn Tigers - 43; Stony Brook - 12
  • Game played at Auburn
  • This was a non-Conference Game
  • Stony Brook's Overall Record is: 3-14 (includes ALL Exhibition games)
  • Stony Brook's Conference Record is: 0-0
  • Chris Porter scored 15 points to pace five players in double figures as fifth-ranked Auburn won its 10th straight, 100-45 over Division I novice Stony Brook. Mamadou N'diaye added 12 points for the Tigers (12-1), who have won 23 straight home contests. It is the second longest streak in school history, 13 off the record set from 1956-1961. "This was a good game for us in our preparation for conference play," Auburn coach Cliff Ellis said. "We were able to see some zone which we have not seen a lot of this season. We will be able to get some good things out of this." Jay Heard and Daymeon Fishback collected 11 points apiece and David Hamilton 10 for Auburn, which opens the Southeastern Conference schedule on Saturday against Georgia, then hosts 25th-ranked Kentucky. "We had to get our plays down and get our timing together and get our new players in the rotation," Hamilton said. "We're going to need the added depth going into the SEC." "We were trying to get everybody experienced so when the SEC comes up we can be prepared," Heard added. The 55-point margin of victory was the eighth-largest in Auburn history. "Offensively, I thought we played better," Ellis said. "This was an overmatched opponent, but most importantly I thought we didn't fall asleep at the wheel and were able to stay focused." Steve Pratta and Rob Hartman scored nine points apiece for Stony Brook (2-14), which is in its first season of Division I competition. "We have played five or six really good teams this year and Auburn is the best team we have faced so far," Stony Brook coach Nick Macarchuck said. "They are very good defensively. Auburn has picked up their game in the last three weeks. You can't score inside against them. They shoot the ball well." The Seawolves connected on just 28 percent (16-of-58) of their shots and committed 19 turnovers. They were 2-of-17 from beyond the arc. "We didn't feel intimidated against Auburn," Hartman said. "We were really excited to come in and play a ranked team like them." "We aren't really concerned with the 19 turnovers that Auburn caused us to make," Pratta said. "We average 20 turnovers a game. Auburn put a lot of pressure on us with their defense. We had a lot of shots, but we weren't shooting the ball very well." Doc Robinson dished out eight assists to move into fifth place on Auburn's all-time list with 465. The Tigers shot 52 percent (38-of-73), including 11-of-20 from 3-point range, and held a 48-31 advantage on the boards. Porter and N'Diaye grabbed eight rebounds apiece. ATT - 10,500

The Fightin' Christians had taken a short-lived lead with 21 seconds remaining, at 60-59, on a pair of Morgan Bell free throws. The victory marked both the Seawolves' first road win of the season and snapped a four-game losing streak. Elon entered the contest with a 5-0 slate on its homecourt, having not lost a game at home since Feb. 13 of last year. The Seawolves jumped out to a 26-19 lead thanks to 11 points from Steve Pratta. However, Elon countered with a 10-2 run to close the first half and Elon led, 29-28. Pablo Porras hit three trifectas early in the second half and Stony Brook led, 39-35. Later in the half, Elon took its largest lead of the game at 56-50. The Seawolves stormed back and took a 59-58 lead on a Porras three-pointer with less than a minute to go. • Long Island native Brian Ehlers (Bay Shore, N.Y.) played hometown hero Monday night, scoring his team's last five points in leading Lafayette to a come-from-behind 71-69 win over Stony Brook. It was the fourth straight loss for Stony Brook (6-21) and the ninth win in 10 games for Lafayette (17-6). With the game tied at 66-66 with 1:20 remaining, Ehlers buried a three-pointer to give his team the lead. Stony Brook's Steve Pratta countered with a three-pointer with 48 seconds remaining -- part of a career-high 25 points for the senior guard to tie the game. But it was Ehlers who banked in a layup on the left side of the hoop with 11 seconds left in the game to give Lafayette the win. Lafayette took an early 5-0 lead, but the Seawolves answered, using a 19-4 run to take a commanding 19-9 lead. Pratta keyed the run with eight points, including two three-pointers. Stony Brook built the lead to 13 points at 33-20 on a Josh Little three-pointer with 4:34 to go in the half. However, the Leopards answered, using a three-point basket by Tyson Whitfield and Stefan Ciosici's three-pointer and layup to end the first half on an 8-0 run. Rob Worthington's layup with 17:07 left in the game gave the Leopards their first lead since early in the first. From that point on, the two teams forged five ties and six lead changes -- the last coming on Ehler's game-winning layup. Four players scored in double figures for Stony Brook. Pablo Porras had 13 points and Ryan McDermott and Francois Oloa had 10 each. Outside of Ehlers' performance, Tyson Whitfield contributed 14 points for Lafayette and Ciosici had 12. ATT - 1,293.
