v     Historical Overview

On June 10, 1664, agents of the new plantation at Setauket, that then was pioneering Brookhaven Town, bought all the Indian land east of Port Jefferson Harbor as far as Wading River. That included what was to become Mount Sinai. At the start, much of this purchase was known by the peculiar name ``Old Man's.''  Most historians trace the name to a Capt. John Scott, a known scoundrel who in the mid-18th Century apparently had duped an elderly retired English Army officer, Maj. Daniel Gotherson, into giving him a large amount of money to buy land near Long Island Sound. The buy was not officially recognized, Scott fled and people would allude to the property Gotherson thought he owned as ``the old man's.''

Patriot Col. Benjamin Tallmadge landed at Old Man's Harbor the night of Nov. 21, 1780, with troops in eight boats before their surprise predawn attack Nov. 23 on British-held Fort St. George in Mastic.

A road called the Upper Cartway in 1716 was made part of a town route now known as North Country Road. The oldest house is believed to be a salt-box type on Rocky Hill Road built about 1705 for Benjamin Davis. It was altered in appearance in the 1930s. A meetinghouse existed in Old Man's as early as 1720, but the first permanent church, the First Congregational Church of Brookhaven, wasn't organized until Dec. 23, 1789. Boat building began at the harbor as early as 1808, but industry did not flourish because of harbor depth and access, and most business gravitated to Port Jefferson.

On April 29, 1840, after postal officials refused to accept ''Old Man's,'' the first local post office was established. According to tradition, the wife of postmaster Charles Phillips opened her Bible at random and laid down her knitting needle on the name Mount Sinai.
