v Historical Overview
The rocky terrain of this hilly
hamlet was acknowledged at the start. The first mention of the place in
Brookhaven Town records was Rocky Hollow in November, 1714. An entry in 1755
called it ``Rocky poynt hollow.'' Noah Hallock, from Southold, is said to have
been the first white settler, in 1721. He built a house that year near what is
now called Hallock Landing. It is still there with the family cemetery. A large
boulder, one of Long Island's biggest, once stood in full splendor behind the
Hallock house, but is now surrounded by houses.
The early main industry was shipment of cordwood across Long Island Sound to
Connecticut. The first, one-room schoolhouse was built in 1862. The post office
was established in 1872, when the population was about 300. The Long Island
Rail Road began serving Rocky Point in the spring of 1895, but that Wading
River line was discontinued Sept. 1, 1938, for lack of business. That and the
Great Depression crimped the land boom of the 1920s, when the New York Daily
Mirror sponsored lot sales in Rocky Point. The newspaper built a fancy
clubhouse, which was given to the new North Shore Beach Property Owners
Association in 1929.
On Nov. 5, 1921, President Warren G. Harding, from his White House desk,
broadcast an international message to inaugurate the world's first commercial
wireless service, via the huge Radio Corp. of America station at Rocky Point.
It had a field of towers 412 feet high and covered 6,200 acres. With changes in
technology, most of the RCA land was given to the state in 1972 and is now a pine
barrens wildlife management area. Wireless inventor Gugliemo Marconi sent the
first wireless message to a ship at sea from Babylon Village in 1901. The
historic shack he broadcast from in Babylon now stands in front of the Rocky
Point School complex on Rocky Point Road.
